The Fitbit Charge 2 review

The Fitbit Charge 2 review

What is a Fitbit Charge 2?

The Fitbit charge 2 is the latest and newest tracker in the Fitbit range, and offers some impressive new features that are well worth taking into account if you are looking for a Fitness tracker.

Tracking your heart rate, exercise, and sleep patterns can be an invaluable tool on your health an fitness journey, and the Fitbit Charge 2, among other features, does just this. It also has a long 5 day battery life, and is waterproof up to 10 meters under water.

Here in this review I will give you my honest opinion of this fitness tracker, and how it has changed certain aspects of my life for the better.

I used mine day and night for a week and got insights into my heart rate and sleep patterns that I had no previous idea about, and it was actually somewhat of a revelation. For instance. I found that my sleep patterns were way out of wack, and I wasn’t always getting the deep REM sleep that I desperately needed.

REM stands for rapid eye movement and we should ideally get about 3 x 90 minute cycles of it to feel well rested the next day, AND also for optimum health. Sleep deprivation is so bad for you that it can knock your immune system and cause untold stress on your whole body and all of its functions…so sleep is VITAL!

Vital Sleep Insightsthe fitbit charge 2 can track your REM sleep

I found out from using my Fitbit, that some nights I wasn’t entering REM sleep at all, which explained why I often felt tired and low the next day. I also discovered patterns to this bad sleeping, like if I was stressed, or if I had even had more than one glass of wine my sleep was effected.

Also, I could put some bad nights down to simply working on my computer until too late at night, as the bright light of the screen was actually stopping melatonin production, and also keeping my brain stimulated when it should be winding down. I have since banned using my computer or doing and work after 9.30pm, and I have slept better ever since. But I never would have known this information without my fitbit.

That brings me onto another great feature of the Fitbit Charge 2, as it will give you reminders of when you need to take breaks and move about, or when you need to start winding down for the night. Most of us need these reminders, as time can easily run away and before you know it it’s 12am!

Another new feature of the Fitbit fitness tracker, is its multi-sports mode which allows you to tap into many activities such as biking and yoga: it takes into account all of your unique data, such as height, age, weight etc, and will analyse your health accordingly.

the fitbit tracks heart rate and heart beats per minute

The Fitbit Charge 2 will track your heart rate while both exercising and at rest, and the best way to get the most accurate results from this (especially when exercising), is to wear it 2-3 finger widths apart up from your your wrist bone as this is where your pulse is strongest.

I love this feature and made an effort to use it at least 3 times a day for at least 5 minutes. I was dubious at first, but it did actually make a difference to not only my productivity but also to my stress levels.

Whenever work was getting on top of me I just chilled for 5 minutes and used the Fitbits guided breathing exercises, which lock onto your heart beat and tailor a personalised breathing exercise just for you.

You can set reminders for you to take time out to do this throughout your day, we all should find just 5 minutes a couple of times a day to fit this in and make it become a habit. The results can be incredible, and for me I need reminders, reminders, reminders, otherwise I will forget.

GPSThe fitbit charge 2 has a built in GPS system

You can get accurate real time statistics with this Fitbit whilst doing your outdoor activities, or sports such as distance and pace, as the fitbit will track your GPS route. For this feature you will need to have your phone with you and your bluetooth enabled, which I found a little annoying, but it is still a great feature for those serious about tracking their fitness.

You can also enable your Fitbit to give you call and text notifications while you are exercising; ensuring you don’t miss any important calls or messages.

So, to wrap up here, my conclusion is that the Fitbit Charge 2, being one of the newest in the range, has the best features when it comes to accurate heart rate and sleep tracking, AND it’s user friendly for those who aren’t tech savvy like myself. It’s a simple case of turning your wrist towards you for the screen to come on, and you can then tap the screen to navigate through the different menu options.

Personally, I wouldn’t be without my Fitbit now as it is the right tool for me and has made my life so much easier. It has definitely helped me vastly improve my health and fitness, but don’t forget you do have to do the hard work yourself. Its has  also been great in the respect that it has helped me to retrain my brain, which of course is one of the main things you need to be able to do if you want long term health and fitness and not just a quick fix.

What is the Fitbit Charge 2

What is the Fitbit Charge 2

What is the Fitbit Charge 2 ?

The Fitbit Charge 2 is the successor of the Fitbit Force and the Fitbit Flex. It is a great little gadget, with more advanced features to track your health and fitness the easy way. It comes as a waterproof wristband device that looks stylish and actually feels comfortable, unlike some of the others I have used.

You just pop it on your wrist in the morning and it will measure everything you do during the day. Its main features include tracking the amount of steps or stairs taken  (yes, it knows the difference between these), active minutes doing strenuous activity, heart rate, and calories burned (including calories burned while resting) AND, you can see at a glance what you have done so far at any time.

The Fitbit Creates Accountability

The real beauty of having the Fitbit track your movements is if you are really serious about changing your life and turning around your health for good, then you will have nowhere to hide here. And this is a good thing: it’s just plain old psychology – if we think we can get away with something, we usually try to, just like cheating on a diet when we think nobody is looking, in the end we only end up cheating ourselves.

And this is exactly where the Fitbit Charge 2 comes in. It creates accountability, and it is proven that when we are held accountable to someone or something we are far more likely to stick to whatever it is we need to do. It really is a powerful tool in this respect.

For example – your Fitbit is set by default to 10,000 steps per day (this is the recommended average, but you can adjust this according to your needs). When you reach your goal of 10,000 steps your Fitbit will celebrate, and as you check your steps going up and up throughout the day you start to feel a sense of achievement. This makes you feel good and makes you WANT to exercise more. It really works!

The Fitbit Will Help Boost Your Confidence!

And so, as you start feeling fitter, healthier and better about yourself, you will find this has a knock on effect on everything else you do. You will want to start engaging in other healthier lifestyle choices such as healthy eating, cutting down smoking, alcohol etc, and best of all you will start to feel confident in yourself.

I’m speaking from experience when I say confidence is ALWAYS a side effect of nutritious food and good exercise, along with vast improvements in mind disorders such as depression and anxiety.

So you can see where I’m going here, creating accountability, even if it’s just to yourself can be hugely life changing and a powerful way to create a better life and healthier body.

There are many other reasons why it is vital you incorporate a ‘Healthy Diet’ and physical exercise into your life, longevity being one of them. Please read my post about how to make these changes today from whatever position of health you may currently find yourself in ‘The Importance of Physical Exercise’.

The Fitbit Charge 2 is simple to use and the screen will automatically turn on by the action of lifting and turning your wrist towards you. This is an action that you can disable if you wish to, but it certainly comes in handy during exercise to see at a glance your heart rate zone and calories burned etc.

The fitbit activity tracker also tracks your heart rate while exercising AND at rest, which you can see at a glance on the screen all day long. When your’e exercising and your heart rate elevates, the Fitbit will let you know which heart rate zone your’e in, be it peak zone, cardio zone, fat burning zone or out of zone.

Another feature that I absolutely LOVE about this Fitbit is the sleep tracking. You need to wear it to bed to be able to use this feature, but it isn’t bulky and you can easily forget it’s there so it shouldn’t be a problem.

You can use it to set sleep goals and sleep reminders. The Fitbit will remind you that it is time to wind down half an hour before bed, which will help you to go to bed calmer, less stressed, and therefore more ready to fall asleep.

Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day will get you into a sleep routine that will reset your body clock, and keep your circadiun rhythms consistent.

The Fitbit offers valuable insights into your sleep patterns:

The Fitbit Charge 2 is capable of tracking your sleep cycles from awake, REM, light and deep sleep. This will give you insight into how much good quality and deep sleep your’e getting, which will be invaluable information to you going forward.

You may realise from this that you need to make some lifestyle changes to stay healthy, like reducing stress, or cutting down on alcohol (you do not go into REM sleep if you have too much alcohol in your system, and REM sleep is vital for the body to heal itself and do the many other jobs it does during sleep hours).

Getting enough quality sleep (which is roughly 7-8 hours per night for adults) is the most important thing you can do for your health and immune system, alongside exercise and healthy eating. It really is that important!

the fotbit also monitors sleep patterns3. SETTING REMINDERS TO MOVE

You can set reminders on your Fitbit Charge 2 which will let you know when you need to get up and move. Sitting stationary all day can cause all sorts of health problems such as slowing of metabolism, compromised posture, back and spine injuries, depression, rheumatic disorders, obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

That’s a long list, proving that it is vital to keep moving in intervals throughout the day, and your Fitbit can be set to remind you of this. Getting up and doing 250 steps per hour (equivalent to a couple of minutes walking) will help your fitness levels, lower your chances of the above diseases, and add to your target steps for the day.

An easy way to get your steps in is to climb stairs instead of taking escalators or lifts. Climbing stairs engages the thigh muscles, which is the biggest muscles in the body and therefore burn the most calories, even at rest. So working on this muscle as much as possible will help to KEEP YOU SLIM!

4. GPS

Some of the outdoor workout features track your GPS route, so when you are out running, walking or cycling, you can get accurate and real time statistics such as distance and pace. For this feature to work you will also have to have your phone with you. You will need both your bluetooth and GPS enabled to use the connected GPS feature, and it’s best for the GPS satellites to lock onto your exact location before you begin.

Your  Fitbit can be set up to let you know of any important calls or texts to your phone while you are exercising. This is done by a discreet LED display that flashes colour coded colours and lights, ensuring that you don’t miss any important calls or texts while exercising.

guided breathing techniques keep you calm and help eliminate stress Another feature of the Fitbit Charge 2 is its personalised guided breathing exercises, which have a guide on the screen. When you are sitting still, the tracker will start to measure any beat to beat changes in your heart rate. When you inhale your heart rate increases, when you exhale it decreases. Your tracker will personalise a breathing plan that is right for you after analysing these breathing and heart rate patterns.

It is very important to do some deep breathing exercises a couple of times a day as it’s proven to reduce stress (which is a MAJOR precursor to many mental and physical illnesses). It only takes a few minutes and can make so much difference to your life, refreshing you and setting you up for the rest of your day.

A great feature of the Fitbit Charge 2 is its long battery life, which means you can keep on your wrist and track constantly, day and night for 5 DAYS without having to remove and charge. This will help give you more accurate readings over a period of time, and is an invaluable feature.

Best Exercise for Belly Fat

Best Exercise for Belly Fat

Has Anyone Ever Tried in Earnest to Lose weight With a Hula Hoop?

I have been using my weighted hula hoop for 8 weeks now and have found it to be the absolute best exercise for belly fat blasting. In fact, it has blown my mind how quickly I have gained a toned and flatter stomach, have gone down almost 2 dress sizes and lost around 8lbs in weight.

And for good reason, as I’ve discovered hula hooping engages the whole body and can burn over 600 CALORIES AN HOUR! That’s more calories and fat burnt than any other abdominal exercise; this is due to the fact it elevates your heart rate up to 84%, which is high enough for your body to trigger the fat burning process.

The fantastic thing about the hula hoop, is not only is it a whole body workout that tones every muscle in the body, but it also vastly improves balance and joint flexibility; is a great stress burner, and is also GREAT FUN to boot. However, to gain the success that I did you will need to commit at least 5 days a week to get the results so quickly.

HOW OFTEN?A hula hoop will help you lose belly fat

I started out the first week by doing 10-15 minutes a day, then I built up to 30 minutes, 5 times a week. I did get a little bruising at first simply due to the fact that I wasn’t used to, it and the hula hoop is weighted which makes it harder (a weighted hula hoop is crucial for the best fat burning effects), but I persevered and it was so worth it. The bruising went after a couple of days and didn’t come back again, so I presume my body hardened to it.

I started doing hula hooping instead of my usual more time consuming workouts of swimming and gym, and found it was so much easier. You can do it in front of the T.V. or listening to music, and in the comfort of your own home come rain or shine so there is never an excuse not to do it.

The key to this exercise, and for specific belly fat loss, is to make sure you keep your stomach pulled in and your core muscles engaged while keeping the hoop spinning above your hips as much as possible. (This will also help refine your motor skills as well).

A Weighted Hula Hoop is Best For the Results I Know You Want!a weighted hula hoop will give you a toned flat belly

You really will need to make sure you are using a weighted hula hoop designed for adults, as the kids ones just won’t work as well for the results you want. It takes a bit of practice but once you’ve mastered it you will start to love it. I even look forward to my hula hooping sessions as my stomach seems to feel more toned immediately after a session and that is a MASSIVE reward – also great when I need to fit into something for a night out!

With your right foot forward, and standing inside the hoop, press it against your lower back, bend your knees a little and give your hula hoop a spin around the waist to get it level. This may take practice, but once you get the hoop moving you need to shift your weight back and forth between your back and front legs. If the hoop starts to drop then stand straight and push your hip harder into the hoop as it spins around to the front.

After you have the hoop going it is best to stand with your feet apart wider than shoulder width, and keeping your head held high really pull that waist in as much as possible while spinning the hoop and working those tummy muscles.

To get the best results you really should be eating a good, healthy diet full of wholegrains, proteins, fruits and vegetables, and cutting out as much as possible of the sugar and junk foods. Did you know there are specific foods that help with the fat burning process? Well, amazingly there are, and If you eat these in conjunction with physical exercise you will see a bigger difference much more quickly.

Check out my great list of the fastest ‘Fat Burning Foods’ and see how quickly those pounds melt away.

The Plant Based Diet:A plant based diet will boost your belly fat loss

It’s worth mentioning at this point, that since eating a mostly low GI plant based diet in the past year my body has turned into a fat burning machine. This is 100% down to me filling myself up on fruits, vegetables, low GI grains, pulses, nuts and seeds, and most importantly, cutting out all refined ‘free’ sugars as much as possible.

Not only will these types of foods help you shed unwanted fat, but you will also LOOK AMAZING, your skin will be fabulous and you will have endless energy to do all the things you want to do in life. It is well worth the effort of making some gradual changes towards this way of eating.

If you would like more tips and advice on how I did this and changed my health and life around in 1 year of eating plant based then please read here ‘Eating Cleans in 10 Easy Steps’.

BEST EXERCISE FOR BELLY FAThula hooping is the best exercise to tone you stomach

After researching, and reading many reviews to find the right hula hoop for the job, I decided upon a mid range, medium weighted foam hoop for maximum comfort (they come in different weights, so you can start lower if you are a complete novice to exercise). It is soft so it’s easier on the stomach and it splits into 6 pieces for easy storage, which is great as these things can be awkward to store.

NOTHING, and I Say NOTHING, Has Given Me Results Like A Weighted Hula Hoop!!

And believe me, I have tried every new fitness fad under the sun over the years and have had much success, but I can honestly say that the hula hoop has given me the most noticeable belly fat reducing results in the fasted time, for the LEAST amount of cost and effort.

It also has the added advantages of being easy to use in your own home, in front of the T.V. or listening to music and is so much less time consuming than other workouts. And don’t think the hula hoop is just for girls as it is a hard core workout that will tone a guys abs to perfection too!

I always endeavor to bring you the most up to date and science based evidence in the health and fitness industry. Please leave any comments, or just let me know how you get on below. I always love to hear your success stories. Thank you for reading.
