ceylon and cassia cinnamon

We  add a lot of cinnamon to this easy berry crumble simply because it’s a superfood among spices and it takes your crumble’s taste into the stratosphere. Yes, cinnamon gives this crumble ZING and works perfectly alongside the maple syrup’s flavours to deliver a taste explosion in your mouth.

Cinnamon has a myriad of health benefits, it’s most famous being the lowering and control of blood sugar.

Other benefits of this wonder spice include high antioxidant levels, anti inflammatory benefits, may help protect against heart disease, is good for the brain, may help protect against cancer alongside a healthy diet in general, and is anti fungal/anti bacterial.

Try adding cinnamon to this fat burning spice mix that you can make at home.

Maple Syrup

We have used maple syrup in this crumble recipe simply because the flavour of maple is superior to any of the other sugar alternative syrups. You need to use a syrup in this crumble as there is no fats to bind the oats, therefore syrup works just as well with zero fat.

You can, however, swap your maple syrup out for other sugar alternative syrups such as date paste, agave nectar or brown rice syrup.

Maple does have health benefits over white, cane sugar in the respect that it contains minerals too.

Highly Versatile

Your blueberry crumble is super versatile and the crumble topping can be used on any kind of crumble you like. You can use other spices such as cake spice, pumpkin spice and nutmeg, depending on the fruits you use these may taste better.

You can swap out your blueberries for any other fruits and it may work just as good.

  • Mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Oven dish 6-8 inches diameter

  • 1.5 cups oats Jumbo rolled oats are best for this, but any will do.
  • 2.5 cups frozen blueberries Preferably organic
  • ½ cup maple syrup save 1 tbsp of this to mix with your blueberries
  • 1 heaped tbsp cinnamon powder
  • ¾ cup water

  • Get your blueberries out to thaw for an hour or so before you start recipe. Thaw them in the oven proof dish you will be baking your crumble in.
  • Put your oven on to heat at around 180 celsius (360 fahrenheit).
  • Meanwhile, prepare your crumble topping by mixing well together the rest of your ingredients in a mixing bowl. This is easily done by hand so no equipment is necessary.
  • Once you berries are thawed you should take a fork and smash at least half of them down to release their juices and flavours. This will help make the delicious blueberry sauce that your berries will be in after baking. Add your tbsp of maple syrup and the water and mix well.
  • Now top evenly with your oats mixture. Put it on a spoonful at a time so that you end up with an even topping. You also want to be careful with this process so your oats don't sink into the blueberries too much.
