The world is getting more and more polluted. It seems we are being hit by this toxic assault from so many different angles it’s hard to know where to begin cleaning up the mess, not only on our planet, but also in our own bodies too.

Sometimes your body can get overburdened with all the toxins it has to deal with on a daily basis. These can come from sources such as junk foods, environmental pollution, household cleaning products, make-up, soaps, perfumes and many other different things. Therefore learning how to stay healthy in a toxic world is VITAL to your ultimate health, well-being and longevity.

In this post we will give you some easy detoxifying steps that will help keep your toxic load to a minimum. Applying these steps every day over time will give you a huge health, energy and vitality boost to help you live your life to the fullest and become the healthiest you can be.

We don’t believe in harsh and limiting detoxification diets. But we do believe in making healthy foods taste delicious whilst still having treats every now and then.

Symptoms Of Toxic Overload

You may just have some (or maybe all) of these symptoms, but they are all signs that your body may not be detoxifying itself as well as it could be and so it may be in need of a helping hand.

  • BRAIN FOG – Like when you can’t think properly, feel confused, or you have trouble remembering simple things like what you had for breakfast or what you did yesterday.
  • LOW ENERGY – Or tiredness for no apparent reason is often a sign of not only a diet lacking in nutrients, but also links have now been made between chronic fatigue and toxic overload.
  • YOU SMELL BAD – Nasty breath, or abnormal smelling body odour may be a signal that your body is toxic and it’s seeping out through your pores.
  • ACHES AND PAINS ALL OVER – Not just a sign of chronic fatigue, but also a sign that you may have toxic build up in your body from the eating of too many junk and chemical filled foods.
  • SKIN PROBLEMS – Dull, listless and spotty skin can be due to toxins coming out of the body. Or a sign that you are putting too many chemical filled products onto your skin in the form of soaps, make-up, creams, deodorants and perfumes.
  • CONSTIPATION – This can be down to not eating enough fibre rich healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, pulses, nuts, seeds and wholegrains. If you’re not eating these then you are more than likely filling up on processed and chemical laden junk foods instead.

Now you know just what may be causing some of your problems, you can start to work on them by cutting down, and ideally out, all of the rubbish that makes your body sick and under par. This isn’t as hard as you may think, and can even be way more cost effective when you learn how to swap and change the bad things and find great alternatives.

Giving your body and life a spring clean will give you a lift and will have so many benefits that you will never look back.

Stay Healthy with these 7 Detoxification Tips

1. EAT A MORE PLANT BASED DIET

plant foods

Eating lots of whole plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and pulses will ensure you are filling yourself up on antioxidants, nutrients and fibre. Nutrients give your body nutrition to do all the repair work it needs to do to keep your immune system strong. While antioxidants help neutralise the free radical damage caused by the bombardment of toxins, and fibre helps drag toxins out of your digestive tract.

2. GREEN SUPERFOOD POWDERS

Taking a shot of a good quality superfood powder every day can do absolute wonders for your health and energy levels. Not to mention giving you the most glowing complexion you’ve ever had, literally!

These powders are also choc-a-bloc with super nutrition in the form of antioxidants, phytochemicals and chlorophyll and are an easy way to make up your veg count if you’ve been busy or haven’t eaten as healthy as you should have.

Many superfood powders, the likes of spirulina and blue-green algaes contain compounds that may specifically remove heavy metals and help neutralise radiation in the body. Something that comes in very handy in our modern environment of pollution and technology. However, if you have known heavy metal poisoning, then you should always detoxify under the care of a specialist as removing metals too quickly can be dangerous.

Take your superfood as a quick shot in some juice or water if you don’t like the taste. Or add to smoothies and juices for an added nutrient boost. However you like to take them, just be sure to get them in as you really can’t afford to miss out on their unique nutrition.

3. PURE WATER

As soon as you start drinking more pure water, you will see the difference in your skin within days – sometimes hours! Considering our bodies are made up of 60% water, it stands to reason we should be mindful of the type we choose to use.

Buy a good water filter and use it for all your hot and cold drinks. It also helps to have a glass drinking bottle that you can fill up and take out with you so you don’t have to buy bottled water whilst you’re out and about. Not only is this environmentally friendly because it cuts down on endless packaging, but you won’t be consuming any of the plastic’s chemical residues that notoriously leak out of plastic bottles.

4. EXERCISE

You may think this is boring and obvious, but you need to stop and think about the true reasons why getting yourself moving is an absolute must in the mobilisation and excretion of toxins. Putting aside the fact that regular exercise has hundreds of benefits for the body, it also helps escort toxins out through SWEAT.

Sweating through exercise specifically causes your deep seated toxins to be released and is different to the sweat that comes from having a sauna or from other types of heat. So, get a sweat up through whatever exercise you enjoy at least 3-4 times a week and it will go a long way towards lowering your toxic load.

5. CUTTING DOWN ON CHEMICALS

You can reduce your toxic load even further by taking extra care about what you choose to put onto your body. Everything that you put on the outside seeps into the inside. Your skin is very absorbent, even if you don’t think it is.

Face and body

Rather than slathering on shed loads of chemical laden creams to cleanse and moisturise, instead just use a simple olive oil soap that can be used all over your body. Then moisturise with some coconut oil afterwards and the job’s done. If you can afford to buy the more expensive organic products then that’s great, but it’s not necessarily needed.

You can use all types of oils on your face at night. Some favourites being coconut, wheatgerm, almond, jojoba, seabuckthorne, argan and avocado oil. Or, you can split open a vitamin E oil capsule and use that as an extra nourishing oil for a real skin treat.

If oils aren’t your thing then you can buy just an organic base cream and make your own amazing creams with a little of the oils mentioned above, and maybe some anti aging essential oils like frankincense and carrot seed.

Hair

Bring out the coconut oil once a week for a conditioning treatment. Then actually fork out and buy organic shampoos and conditioners and make them last by only using a little.

You will absolutely notice a BIG difference in your hair when you stop putting chemical products on it. Don’t be fooled by labels, as a lot of companies boast that they use organic products but fail miserably to mention that just because one of their ingredients is organic, it still contains all the usual suspect chemicals right alongside it.

Make-up

Make-up is something that you put on your face and it STAYS there all day. So, you can image how bad that can potentially be for your skin if it’s filled with rubbish (which most are by the way, even the most expensive brands can be the worst offenders!). This is why organic make-up is something you should splash out on if you can, especially when it comes to products that actually sit on the skin, such as foundation, concealer, blusher, powders and lipsticks.

You can get away with inorganic products such as mascara, eyeliner and eyebrow pencils as these don’t touch a big area of skin.

Perfume

I know you like to smell nice, of course you do, but did you know that most commercial perfumes are just a cesspool of chemicals, parabens and other hormone and endocrine disrupting nasties? They’re also EXPENSIVE to boot!

Alternatively, you can use a small dab of your favourite essential oil instead (providing it doesn’t have a reaction on your skin. Test it first) for a fraction of the price. Or, make your own perfume roller-ball with a carrier oil and a few drops of whatever essential oil you like. Rose and blue lotus are both amazing.

Doing this will be highly cost effective, as once you have your base products you can just remake them over and over again.

If making your own perfume isn’t your thing, then there are also lots of lovely organic perfume companies out there these days if you want to splash out on something special.

6. HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS

If you use bleaches, detergents, air fresheners or any other chemical products around your home, then you are probably breathing in this pollution daily. Not only is this bad for your lungs (which are one of your major detoxification organs), but these products are often filled with the worst kind of chemical and endocrine disruptors.

Air fresheners

Air freshener sprays are among the worst toxic offenders as they are deliberately sprayed into the air and breathed directly into the lungs. But this is easily remedied but just not using them. Or, if you feel you can’t live without your air fresheners, then use a simple spray bottle filled with water and add a few drops of your favourite essential oil.

A good combination for an antibacterial spray would be lavender and tee-tree. These are both among the cheapest oils and will save you huge amounts of money. You can just keep refilling your bottle many times before you need to buy more oils. Of course, you can use any oils you choose, and often you can buy lovely oil blends that are suitable as air fresheners too.

You can also use an essential oil burner or vapouriser which is just as effective, but you may use your oils more quickly this way.

Cleaning products

There are lots of alternatives to cleaning products, the most popular being:-

  • Baking soda – Can be used in place of cream cleaners to clean dirt and grime from bathrooms and kitchen surfaces. Just use the straight powder and a wet cloth or scourer.
  • Distilled white vinegar – Is another great cleaner for gleaming surfaces, and is also a great chemical free disinfectant.
  • Salt – A great scrubber as it’s pretty course, which makes it a great product to use when something really needs a good old scrub. Be careful to only use it on things that won’t scratch.
  • Lemon juice – Is a great anti bacterial, anti fungal, and stain remover, so therefore can be used to clean surfaces where you prepare food (even chopping boards). Or use in your bathroom for a lovely fresh smell. Just squeeze the lemon directly onto the surface and clean with a damp cloth. Be aware, this is not suitable for granite or stone tops.

7. HOUSE PLANTS

Having the right kind of plants in your home can help detoxify your living environment from dust, germs, traffic pollution (if you live on a main road), and all manner of nasties that may be lurking in the atmosphere of your house.

Add a couple of these great detoxifiers to the main rooms of your house (or anywhere else you please) if you’re a plant lover and reap the benefits of lovely, fresher air.

  • English Ivy
  • Weeping Fig
  • Snake Plant
  • Chrysanthemum
  • Aloe Vera
  • Spider Plant
  • Dragon Tree
  • Broad Lady Palm
  • Chinese Evergreen
  • Areca Palm
  • Peace Lily
  • Skindapsus

CONCLUSION

There are many ways to keep your body firing on all cylinders and diet is a BIG part of that. Adding more nutritious plant foods into your life will make a huge difference to your health in the long-run.

Don’t over fret on the world being a toxic place. Just make some simple changes like the ones suggested in this post and you will be negating a lot of this damage, but it’s impossible to be perfect. Don’t try to be.

Your tips are extremely useful, thanks for sharing. A healthy diet, lots of water, and a regular exercise are an excellent combination for staying healthy in a world full of dirt.

  2. Great article Stefanie, I’m a healthy lifestyle maniac and I really enjoyed reading your article. Great tips on how to stay healthier. I’m actually using all your tips except plants in my house. But after reading your article I’m seriously thinking about buying some plants. I can agree that all your tips are very effective, and exercise plus plant-based food really helps me to feel better. Recently I bought green superfood powder and I can agree that they can do wonders, and once I have started having green superfood as my supplement I feel a lot more energetic and don’t get ill that often anymore. Thank you for sharing!

    1. Hi Marus, wow, sounds like you are already living an amazing healthy lifestyle and know exactly what you’re doing. Yes, get a few plants, you will be doing yourself a huge favour and making the air that you breathe in your home purer.

  3. Great tips Stefanie as usual, hope all is well with you.
I am a great fan of spirulina and also like organic celery juice in the morning too.
    Keep up the great content.

  4. I recently started using essential oils as aromatherapy. I hope to use them as cleaning products so I won’t use the toxic ones anymore. I do not have a green thumb and am horrible at keeping plants alive, but I have actually been considering getting several plants since reading another article similar to yours recently that suggested the same thing. Thanks for all the tips. I will refer to your site for more help as I need it.

    1. Thanks Sharon, and I totally get it, I’m terrible at keeping house plants alive too – apparently you need to water them or something! Ha ha. But seriously, they are just perfect for purifying the air, and I find them so calming to so I have a feeling they help remove negative ions from the atmosphere. Plus, it is lovely to have a bit of nature in your home as well; helps to relieve stress.

I too am in the process of experimenting with more essential oils in burners, sprays, perfumes and my homemade face creams. They are wonderful.

  5. Stefanie……..This is a fantastic and thorough article on cleansing the human body of toxins. All of your recommendations I absolutely agree with. About 10 years ago I took blue-green algae for quite a few years and it was great! I don’t remember the name of it but it was from Gracier Lakes in Washington. May be you know what it’s called. Thanks for sharing this incredible information.

    1. Hi, and thanks, what a great compliment! I’m really happy you agree with all my recommendations and have even tried and tested these things for yourself. I take a green superfood powder every day these days and simple couldn’t live without it in term of the energy and immunity it seems to give me.

I’m not sure of the brand you’re talking about, it could be the Klamath Lake one which I know is really high quality. You can find it on my favorites list here if you would like to check it out. Best Green Superfood Powders of 2019
