Are you fed up with that bloated feeling, or that annoying belly fat that just won’t shift no matter what you throw at it? Well help is at hand as there are actually certain metabolism boosting foods that you could be eating to beat this. By incorporating these top 20 fast fat burning foods for easy weight loss into your diet as much as possible you’ll soon be looking super lean and buff in no time.

I’m not going to lie to you, losing fat and keeping it off in the long term does involve taking out of your diet the damaging, toxic, anti-nutrients that come in the form of trans fats, sugars and fast or fried foods, and replacing them with healthy, omega rich fats from nuts, seeds, grains, fruits and vegetables.

Take things one step at a time:-

You don’t need to give everything up straight away, just gradually replace the junk foods you buy with healthier alternatives; after all, long term health, vitality, clarity, and protection from disease should always be your long term goal along with getting the body you desire.

Fermented foods like miso, tempeh, sauerkraut and plant based yogurts with added live cultures all contain friendly bacteria, which help the gut function better to reduce bloating. If you don’t like these foods you could alternatively take a good supplement for a couple of months to help reduce sugar cravings and allow you to kick start your weight loss.

Two types of probiotics that are specific to this are lactobacillus gesseri, or a probiotic blend called VSL#3 that delivers 450 billion good bacteria that come in 8 different strains.

2. PREBIOTICS

These guys will feed your friendly bacteria (probiotics), therefore helping them to proliferate: Eat artichoke, dandelion greens, raw and cooked onion, garlic, leeks, asparagus, oats, wheatbran and bananas for these effects.

It also comes in high in zinc and fiber, and can act as an anti viral, anti bacterial immune booster that promotes healthy skin, hair and nails. Above all, it also contains chromium which helps controls blood sugar, thus making it a good weight control food.

You can also buy chromium in supplement form at much higher doses, which may be helpful if you are somebody who has sugar/carbohydrate cravings, or other blood sugar problems. But do consult your doctor first if you are taking if for medical purposes.

Pulses include beans, lentils, chickpeas and peanuts; all of which are full of protein, fiber, minerals and B-vitamins. They are all low GI foods, which is the term used for the rate that carbohydrates are turned to sugar in the body – the lower the better.

Pulses release their energy slowly over hours which means they sustain you for long periods, and are best paired with a low G.I. carbohydrates such as brown rice, wholegrain pasta or versatile quinoa. The best way to use cinnamon is to buy the flaky bark variety and grind it yourself in either a coffee grinder or a pestle and mortar. Doing it this way will his way will keep it fresh, fragrant, and super delicious, plus it will still have all its delicious, fragrant oils and nutrients in tact.

There are two types of cinnamon: ceylon and cassia, and they are a world apart when it comes to nutrition. It is important you buy the ceylon type with the flaky bark (see pic) and not the Cassia which is rolled into a thick hard roll, and can actually be detrimental to health if taken in high doses.

Many pre-ground shop bought cinnamon will be the cheaper cassia variety (for obvious reasons), but it will rarely tell you on the packaging exactly what you’re getting, which is why it’s best to grind your own.

As one of the highest protein vegetables, broccoli is also one of my favorite foods to burn fat fast and I actually eat it almost every day. It’s full of fiber to keep you feeling full, and also has a specific phytonutrient that stimulates fat cells, thus allowing you to burn fat faster.

Another added incentive to eat this fab veg is it has also been found to contain a compound that can convert estrogen (linked to prostate and breast cancers) into a harmless metabolite. So for fat loss terms, less estrogen which has been associated with thigh, stomach and hip fat means more fat loss.

Berries of all kinds are low GI and choc full of antioxidants and fiber, making them ALL very healthful. Antioxidants not only protect you from cell damage, but also help with controlling weight, so eating lots of antioxidant rich foods is VERY important.

And the best part: green tea also raises your metabolism, which in turn helps you to burn fat more efficiently.

Firstly, it has been proven that eating avocado regularly will cause satiety, fill you up, give you a good dose of heart healthy monounsaturated fat, protect eyes from ultra violet light damage, lower bad cholesterol, is antimicrobial, lowers your BMI, and also helps you to lose that stubborn and dangerous belly fat that we all loathe so much.

Not only that, but an avocado contains 20 different vitamins and minerals which gives it the status of being one of the BEST fat burning foods around. 

20. PROTEIN POWDERS

Protein powders really had to go on this list for the simple fact that a high protein/low carb diet is one of the fastest ways to lose weight for a number of reasons:-

  • Eating more protein will keep you full because it is low GI, thus giving you a ‘slow burn’ of energy and keeping you full for hours.
  • Eating lots of high protein foods (instead of refined carbohydrates) will leave you less room for, and less hungry for the bad stuff.
  • A high protein diet will keep your muscle mass high (especially important when you are combining diet and exercise). The more muscle mass you have on your body the more calories you will burn continuously, even when you’re just sitting on your butt. This is because muscle needs more calories to maintain itself than fat, so the maths is simple.

Plant based powders are among the best as they will cause no negative effects like their dairy counterparts can (apart from maybe a bit of gas or bloating if you are not used to them). These are especially good if you are dairy intolerant or have other milk based allergies.

Some of the awesome plant based protein powders on the market these days also contain lots of other nutrients, enzymes, and superfoods which all help with absorption and digestion. They really can be a great staple to keep in the cupboard for when you either fancy a snack, need a pre or post workout shake, or just want to be certain you’re obtaining adequate amounts of protein to keep your muscle mass high and your body in fat burning mode.

How Much Protein do I need?

For weight loss purposes (or if you are training hard) you should aim for between 1-2g per kg of body weight. FYI – you will more than likely need a protein supplement on a vegan or plant based diet (especially if you exercise a lot) as it is harder to hit these goals through plant foods alone.

  2. Well there are definitely a few more foods I’m gonna need to start eating before my holiday. I have to say I’m not a big fan of beans, lentils and chickpeas, it’s just something about they’re texture that puts me off. But I were to have some dinner recipes to include them in then I guess it would be easier to make the effort, like mixing some in with a stir-fry or chilli. Do you know of any dishes I could try?

      Glad I could be of some help. And yes my absolute favorite recipe is vegan chocolate chilli. i know it may sound weird but it is a thing and you must use really dark chocolate of at least 70% cocoa (which is another fat burning food by the way, as are chilli peppers so you can get them all into the same dish).

      You basically just need to fry some onions, chillies and garlic in oil then add the spices like cumin, paprika or cayenne if you like it really hot and dry fry for a few minutes then add 2 tins chopped tomatoes and about 40g dark chocolate let it melt in and add about 3 different tins of beans like butter beans, kidney beans, black beans. Simmer for 15 mins and its done. I make this at least once a week and have it for days. Really cheap as well!

  3. I eat 20-25 almonds a day as my pre-lunch snack. One thing that I do with them is soak overnight. This helps to soften nuts a bit so it is easier to digest.

      Yes they are full of fat but in moderate amounts it is a good, heart healthy omega rich fat so you should have a handful of nuts a day (should be unroasted and unsalted for maximum benefits). Also, the fat in them is satiating so you don’t feel the urge to eat other more unhealthy fatty foods. Glad I could be of some help to you.

  10. Interesting and beneficial article on super fat burning foods, I am happy to see many of the foods on your list I am eating regularly.

    When I do indulge I eat dark chocolate, I do feel satisfied and content after eating dark chocolate. I eat a dark chocolate bar about once a week to ten days, this has not caused me any weight problems I am happy to say.

  11. The entire list looks delicious. Avocados are one of my favorite foods and you cannot go wrong with dark chocolate (well, unless you are allergic to it or something). I have seen nutritional yeast in many vegan recipes, but I am a little intimidated to find it in the grocery store. Any tips?

      Thanks for reading my article and yes I love all those foods also, I try to eat most of them every day and I’m pretty sure they work even better together. (Especially the chocolate!) As for nutritional yeast, I have never seen it in your average supermarket but you can usually get it in health food stores, if not you could try online. It is pretty inexpensive to buy.

  12. Wow I had no idea some of these foods were actually good to burn fat and help you stay healthy. Especially chocolate.

    I am one who is very skinny so this doesn’t really apply to me, but I plan on working out soon so if I ever do need to a cut and burn off a few extra pounds of fat while building muscle — it is good to know there are tasty and healthy foods that do this.

  14. Thank you for this powerful article. I had been looking for information like this already. I am trying to lose weight, and I have lost a lot, but somehow my belly fat is not shrinking like it should. THere are some foods you mentiond that I did not know were beneficial when it comes to losing belly fat, especially chocolate and cinnamon. Of others I was aware of, like grapefruit.

    I would like to know if there are some foods that prevent belly fat loss?

    • Hi Oscar, im glad you found this information useful, and congratulations on losing so much weight already. You really must have worked hard to achieve this result, but I guess now you have reached a plateau. This happens unfortunately, and just means you may need to step things up a notch, ie less calories, more exercise. Try to add these fat burning foods as part of your daily allowance. 

      As for foods that give you belly fat there are many, and they mostly come in the form of refined sugars and carbohydrates. Keeping belly fat off is all about eating low GI which will keep your blood sugar stable. Keeping blood sugar stable will stop your body being continuously flooded with insulin, which isn’t good because this insulin clears sugars from the blood and stores them into fat cells. And hence we put on weight. Another bad thing about these high sugar foods is that they make you put on belly fat specifically, so it’s vital to stick to a low GI diet for long term weight loss.     I really love broccoli, bananas, grapefruits, and avocados. I also enjoy almonds,walnuts and whole grain breads and cereals.

    • Hi Alice, yes a lot of people have said that! It’s great that we can have our favorite foods and still lose weight isn’t it? I think I probably have most things on that list almost every day and it certainly helps to keep me trim, along with lots of exercise of course. Which I think is a good point to make as I do believe keeping a healthy weight is about the correct balance of good diet and exercise. One without the other means you only get half the results.

      And yes, green tea is a an excellent replacement for coffee (though you might not think so at first) as it still contains enough caffeine to give you a boost, but its kind of a cleaner caffeine that’s processed differently in the body, therefore I find it doesn’t give you the jitters or affect sleep like coffee can.

      I think the key is to make sure you swap them with other more unhealthy foods rather than just add them on top as they do obviously contain calories.

  17. I actually will include almonds in my diet, however, I want to have the best results for fat loss. I do intermittent fasting. What do you recommend for me?

    • Hi Furkan yes intermittent fasting is a great ting to do to keep weight off and to keep the body detoxified. I just wish I had the will power to do it myself but I love my food so much, also I do a lot of training so that would throw me out as I wouldn’t be able to do that. I would be interested to know how you fit your fasting around your training and how long you fast for?

      I have a few little tips to help you keep the body in fat burning mode that are pretty much calorie free – always eat a grapefruit every day, have a 30ml shot of apple cider vinegar with ‘the mother’, in warm water and lemon juice every morning, and add ceylon cinnamon to your breakfast or shakes.

      Always make sure you use the flaky bark ceylon cinnamon and not the hard bark cassia type as it is much healthier. Most supermarket bought ground cinnamon will be the casia type as it is much cheaper. Please read my post about this before you start using it

  18. Wow, this list is endless and I learned so much on the various foods that can burn fat. Several I love and eat all the time. Others, I do love but I am going to try and incorporate them more into my daily eating routine. You always have great information and I love coming back to your site. Thanks for sharing!

    • Yes, I luckily love all these foods also and eat most of them everyday, and definitely ALL of them in the course of a week! Fortunately, many of them can easily be added into your everyday diet and meal plans and every little trick helps when it comes to keeping weight down. I find doing lots of little things really makes a big difference over time.

      One thing that isn’t on the lit that you may find interesting is apple cider vinegar, though you must buy the type with ‘the mother’ as this has all the benefits. It has been proven to proven in trials to lower the sugar spikes you get after eating your meals which makes you eat less during the day, and you only have to have it once a day for it to work all day long.

      Please read more in my post about it to find out amounts and best times to do it. It is worth checking out because it really does work. When I take ACV in the morning I really do feel less hungry during the day so therefore I will eat less resulting in weight loss. So win win!

    • Ha ha, yes me too! I eat an awful lot of these things every day, but you do have to count them in with your calories and fat intake for the day and not have them just as ‘extra’ food on top otherwise I don’t think they will work, I always try to stress that to people like I think I did in the post. Oh, but avocados and dark chocolate are definitely my all time favorite things anyway, and they also happen to be on the list. Fantastic isn’t it?

  20. Oh, I love dark chocolate and I know that it is good for helping with belly fat. So by high cocoa, you mean dark chocolate right? I was surprised with some of the other foods like yeast. I really didn’t realize it had so many vitamins! And I love bananas a cinnamon. All great things I can use for snacks.

    • Yes, yeast is a fantastic source of B Vitamins, in fact I use nutritional yeast flakes in lots of dishes as it has a cheesy kind of flavour. As I am a vegan now I can make vegan parmesan by wizzing up nutritional yeast, sesame seeds, salt, pepper and dried garlic flakes or powder. It is yum!

      Yes, when I say high cacao chocolate then I mean the dark stuff – anything over 70% but preferably 85% as whatever percentage you have left is going to be sugar which is obviously bad for you. Other than that, go ahead and enjoy. It is probably best not to eat too much close to bedtime as it can have a stimulating effect so watch out for that.

The great thing is you can pretty much get some, or at least one of them into every meal or snack, plus they are all pretty inexpensive. It’s always worth the time and effort in investing in our bodies… after all, where else are we gonna live? lol

  22. Great article… and super informative. I have more belly fat now than I ever have, mainly because of some intensely high stress that lasted literally the last three years. I exercise regularly and do not eat sugar – have also cut back on carbs – very little breads etc. Would a diet with these foods help with stress induced weight gain or is there something else that could be added to help. I am getting pretty desperate.

    • Hi Corey, I’m sorry to hear that you had problems with stress for so long. Stress releases the hormone cortisol which unfortunately promotes fat storage. Without being able to go more in-depth with your symptoms and problems ,and due to the fact that you can’t lose weight even though you are putting in effort would suggest some kind of adrenal fatigue/slow thyroid (I am not an expert on this subject but I work with a medical herbalist and see this sort of thing quite a lot). These things are usually triggered by prolonged stress!

      I would suggest keeping your sugar very low, eating high protein plant foods, and if you eat animal products then they should be high quality/organic if possible. You would also benefit from a green superfood powder every day to help give you a high dose of nutrients, plus soothe and boost the adrenal glands.

      As for exercise, if you do actually have adrenal fatigue then I believe you have to stop exercising for a while (maybe 6 weeks) while you are working on nourishing and healing your body with good quality foods and staying away from any stress whatsoever. This is because exercise actually puts stress on the body and the adrenal glands and may well exacerbate the problem.

      After this period is up then you should have hopefully reset things a bit and you can start training again. The best training you should do for burning belly fat is weight and resistance training. It’s crucial to keep muscle mass up to keep your hormonal system in balance and to keep fat off.

      Anyway, I am just speculating here not making any diagnosis, you may ant to see a specialist about it but thyroid problems etc are usually the reason you can’t lose weight no matter how hard you try.

      • Thank you! I do eat meat but have added green superfood powder, literally this week! I went in for thyroid testing and nothing showed up but I think doing what I can to reset will help. I know something has been off. I will try your suggestions and let you know what the results are….

        • Hi Corey, I actually had my thyroid tested at the doctors and they said everything was fine, but when I showed the figures to the medical herbalist that I work with she said I was on the borderline for a slow thyroid, which was why I was having problems with not being able to lose weight.

          The doctors test results just put you into a certain range and if you fall between that range, even if you’re just about to slide off it, they will still say all is fine. I’m not blaming them as this is all they can do as medicine isn’t given until after you are already sick. They don’t do preventatives as it would cost too much and take way too much time. I see this kind of thing all the time at work and it’s frustrating. I don’t know how old you are, but the fact is as we get older the thyroid does slow down and makes it harder to lose weight. Oh joy hey?

          Please do let me know how you get on and if you don’t see results then I would go and see a proper medical herbalist who can definitely help with this naturally. That’s how I healed my problems in the end with a mixture of natural supplements and diet.

    This is a great list of fast fat burning food! My favorites are almonds and walnuts. Unfortunately, both are very expensive in Portugal, where I live.

    I didn’t know that Green Tea has also effects on how fast we burn fat. I’ll definitely give it a try.

    • Hi Mia, it’s a shame nuts are so expensive in Portugal – still, at least you’ve got the sunshine ha ha! Actually, nuts are pretty cheap here in the UK, you can pick them up in the pound shops and very inexpensively in the supermarkets. The organic ones are always much more more expensive to buy though.

      Yes green tea is a great fat burner, as is white tea and many other drinks. In fact I have a post about fat burning drinks

  24. This is great I am always looking for new healthy snacks. I am really happy to see that walnuts made the list of fast fat burning foods they are one of my favorite snacks.
    I work out every day so protein powder is part of my daily diet. I think I am going to try the green superfood powder as a pre-workout drink because of the boost of energy it gives.
    I also agree that the best way to lose weight is through diet AND exercise I didn’t even know they made a weighted hula hoop.
    Wich one of these foods would you recommend as a snack between breakfast and lunch?

    • Hi Travis, that’s great you work out every day, I try to too which is why I always have to keep my diet healthy and to lots of high protein plant foods.

      Yep, a weighted hula hoop is just such a fantastic and fun way to burn lots of calories and tone you belly and bottom. You can easily pick them up off of Amazon quite cheaply, and it’s an easy to do exercise at home, so great for those who can’t or don’t want to leave the house.

      My go to snacks are usually either a protein shake as they are filling and low calorie, or a hand full of raw nuts and some fruit OR my fave as it gives you such an energy boost is a superfood powder. Usually I like to steer clear of anything too sugary as it throws your blood sugar out for the rest of the day, however if you are going to do a workout then it’s fine as you’ll need the energy – but I would only go for natural sugars though, such as dried dates, figs, and bananas. And I do have a weakness for dark chocolate!

      At the moment I’m really into spirulina as it feels so nourishing to drink, but I don’t like to take the same thing all the time and often vary them up with Dr. Schulze’s super food, or whatever other blend I’m testing out. I think the blends are good because you get a bit of everything.
